WhatsApp Messenger may not support universal encryption

9to5mac Media quotes ProPublica in a report claiming that Facebook can read messages sent on WhatsApp properly, and this is not possible with universal encryption; Because in global encryption, only people present in the content chat can decrypt.

This report bases its claim on metadata analysis; That is, the way Facebook tries to detect problematic messages without knowing their content. At the same time, the report cites the expertise of supervisors and engineers present at the company, claiming that supervisors can review users’ messages, images, and videos.

Facebook insists WhatsApp supports universal encryption; This means that the company can not see the private content of users’ messages at all. However, the detailed ProPublica report shows something else:

Before users send messages on WhatsApp, this reassuring message appears on the screen: “No one outside of this chat, even WhatsApp, can read or listen to the messages.” This reassuring message is not true. WhatsApp has more than a thousand contract employees on the floors of office buildings in Austin, Texas, Dublin and Singapore, which handles millions of user messages.

For $ 16.5 an hour, with the help of Facebook-specific software, these employees review a large collection of personal messages, images, and videos that WhatsApp users report as inappropriate content and then filtered by AI-based systems. Contractors usually judge in less than a minute about every message that appears on their computer screen, from spam and scams to a possible terrorist attack.

The report also states that an anonymous revelation filed a complaint with the US Securities and Exchange Commission last year, which was received by ProPublica. According to the complaint, WhatsApp uses a wide range of contractors and artificial intelligence systems and user account information to track users’ messages, images, and videos. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook’s claims of user privacy were false. A company spokesman said he had not seen such a complaint. The US Securities and Exchange Commission has not taken any public action on the complaint.

In response to the report, Facebook did not comment on the accuracy of WhatsApp’s global encryption, saying only: “We have built WhatsApp in a way that restricts the data we collect and at the same time provides us with tools to prevent spam and access threats. “According to reports received from users, these messengers are being abused.” If this is confirmed, it will be a big scandal for WhatsApp messengers.
